MGA1500cc ENGINE REBUILD (1622cc
SPECIFICATIONS)
The following information should be read in conjunction with
technical article MGA3 " MGA 1500ccc ENGINE REBUILD
(1698cc SPECIFICATIONS).
This upgrade requires MGA1622cc (STD) flat top pistons (3" Bore)
or any of the available oversize pistons. Also required are 1622cc or MGB 3
main Brg connecting rods. Rod bearings are identical for all MGA 1500cc 1600cc
1622cc and MGB 1800cc (3 main bearing) engines.
Lightening your existing flywheel from the OEM weight of 29lbs to
around 23lbs will be beneficial. After machining have the flywheel & clutch
cover assembly, along with the crankshaft & pulley, balanced. We recommend
"Crowther Racing Engines" (707 778 6050) for this, plus all your machine shop
work.
We recommend updating your timing cover & crankshaft pulley to
the 5" MGB damper style. Make sure you have the matching cover & damper
assemblies.
If you are using ARP rod bolt set #206-6003 as a replacement for
the OEM style, be sure to check for rod bolt head interference with the
cylinder block wall on number 1 and 4 cylinders. Also, be sure that the one of
the bolts on each connecting rod does not bottom out in its thread. Shorten
bolt as necessary.
Piston length on the 1500cc and 1600cc engines are identical
3.035", and the length of the 1500cc bore will accommodate the lower piston
skirt ring which is common to the 1622cc piston.
Valve relief notch dimensions differ than that of the 1698cc
conversion. these are as follows:
INTAKE VALVE
Cutter size 1.875" OD with 3/64" radius, whose center line is
measured at 2.625" from the spark plug side of the cylinder block. Machine to a
width of .135" and to a depth of .150".
EXHAUST VALVE
Cutter size 1.75" OD with 3/64" radius, whose center line is as
above. Machine to a width of .285" and to a depth of .150".

NOTE: To prevent possible 12H3357/A pushrod interference, we
recommend boring out the engine block pushrod guide tube holes to .660". Also,
if you use British Automotive roller rocker set, you will have to have the
cylinder head pushrod guide tubes holes elongated or bored out to the same
.660" to prevent the same problem from occurring.
